TOOLS

There are a number of tools that can help you as you treat your dog.  Here are some of the best:

  • Gentle leaders

These are head halters that can be used to control  the dog’s head and therefor his mouth.  While some dogs may paw them off, studies have indicated that despite this, their stress levels do not go up.  This will allow to be much safer in those situation where you absolutely need to have control.

  • Light leashes with the handle loops cut to use inside

These can be used for dogs who may be aggressive towards his or her owners.  This allows you to lead the dog away without putting your hand near his mouth.  Cat leashes are good for this

  • Clickers and Target sticks for training purposes

Clicker training is a really good training method for aggressive dogs.  Clicker training is NOT the use of shock collars or e-collars, or anything else that delivers any kind of electrical charge or pulse to a dog.  These should not be used.  Target sticks can be good for those dogs who bite people’s hands.  Use a stick instead!

  • Dog T-shirts that provide visual information that people should not approach

Good for working with dogs outside where people might be inclined to pet, or other dog owners might be inclined to bring their dog over to stay.  This symbol is instantly understood by adults and children alike.

  • DAP diffusers (may depend on the nature of the dog’s anxiety)

DAP diffusers emit pheramones that are similar to thatof a nursing mother.  They have had some effect is helping dogs keep calmer in the house or in cars.

  • Video cameras to record behavior
Essential for understanding your dog’s behavior.  In the heat of the moment, not only is it hard to be objective, we can’t take in all the info the dog is providing back to us when we are involved in training.
  • Window clings for dogs who react through windows

Great for dogs who are territorial aggressive or generally anxious about the goings on through windows.  Some window clings allow you to block their view without blocking the light.
