Chamomile for Dogs: Anti-anxiety effects

Chamomile flower

Chamomile is a natural supplement that is sometimes used to help manage anxiety in dogs, although there is limited research on its effectiveness in this regard.

Chamomile is believed to have anti-anxiety effects due to its ability to increase levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which help regulate mood and emotions.

It also contains compounds called flavonoids. Flavonoids are a type of plant compound that are found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. They are responsible for giving many plants their vibrant colors, and they also have a number of potential health benefits. Some flavonoids in Chamomile been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system.

While there is limited research on the use of chamomile specifically for anxiety in dogs, some studies have suggested that it may have potential benefits. For example, a study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that a chamomile extract was effective in reducing anxiety-related behavior in dogs.

Anecdotal reports from dog owners and veterinarians also suggest that chamomile may be helpful in reducing anxiety in some dogs, although it may not be effective for all dogs.

In humans, the calming effect on the nervous system is considered to be helpful for mild to moderate anxiety short-term.

It’s important to note that while chamomile is generally considered safe for dogs, it’s always a good idea to consult with a veterinarian before using any supplements or medications to manage your dog’s anxiety or other health conditions.

Short and Long term effects

Chamomile may have a short-term effect on anxiety in dogs. Its calming effects are typically seen within 30-60 minutes after administration, and may last for several hours.

However, it’s important to note that chamomile is not a long-term solution for anxiety in dogs. While it may provide temporary relief from anxiety symptoms, it is not a substitute for addressing the underlying causes of anxiety and implementing a comprehensive management plan that may include behavior modification, training, and other interventions.

Additionally, some dogs may develop a tolerance to chamomile over time, which means that its effectiveness may diminish with continued use. For this reason, chamomile should be used as a short-term solution for anxiety, and should be incorporated as part of a larger management plan for anxiety in dogs.

For example, once a dog has been taught how to relax in a non-stressful situation, anti-anxiety supplements and medication might be useful for active behavior modification, where your dog is ready to learn how to relax in the presence of the something that is triggering their anxiety.

Potential side effects

However, like any supplement or medication, there is a potential for side effects.

Some dogs may be allergic to chamomile, which can cause symptoms such as itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing. Chamomile may also interact with certain medications, so it’s important to consult with a veterinarian before using chamomile or any other supplement with a dog who is taking prescription medication.

In high doses, chamomile may cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Additionally, chamomile should not be used in pregnant or nursing dogs.

It’s important to use caution when giving chamomile or any other supplement to a dog, and to closely monitor them for any signs of adverse effects. If your dog experiences any symptoms that concern you, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, seek veterinary care immediately.

Additionally, not all supplements marketed for dogs may be of high quality, so it’s important to choose a reputable brand and carefully read the product label to ensure that it contains safe and effective ingredients.
